Gingerbread Houses 2009 (by Kat)

Bet and I have two very old, very dear traditions. These go back to the very beginning of our friendship. Back to 6th grade. Back to our Trixie Belden days.

One is a June tradition. One is a December tradition. And this past weekend, after filling up on turkey at my in-law's, my daughter and I zoomed across the state for the annual rendition of the December ritual--gingerbread houses!

This is what Bet's house looked like Friday through Sunday:
In the far back, you can see her son's first house ever.
In the front is her daughter's house-in-progress.

This is Bet's house. A fairy house.
No nibbling allowed on this one!
Mushrooms, acorns, and galls,
fir, moss, and lichen!

On the left is her son's arm, reaching up for more candy, please!

My daughter rolled out some laffy taffy and lined the holly cut-out.
Then she used the cut-out as a shutter.
She's so cool!

And here's a little bird perched on the ridgeline.
She sculpted it out of the wax surrounding a baby belle cheese.
She mimicked the grape vines growing on the side of our home.

Terrifying snow monsters welcome you
to the door of the house I made.

Bet will post the photos of her daughter's home.
It's electrified!!!
How cool is that?!

  1. I love the shutter - that's brilliant.

That fairy house is unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it. Is there a Gingerbread House World' Fair or something Bet could enter that in?

So do you eat these eventually?

  2. I tend to nibble, which just grosses Bet out to the max. She won't touch them!
